The construction of the original cable car took place in an incredibly short time and under extremely unfavorable climatic conditions, when the frosts reached almost -30 degrees Celsius. The foundation of the upper station was started on January 8, 1940.
The test drive took place on Saturday, March 3, 1940, and the following day began regular operation. In the first month, more than 3,000 people were transported. At the same time, seven trucks were used to transport visitors' luggage. In 1956, ČSD began the general reconstruction of the cable car. The mechanical and electrical equipment was modernized and the original supports were replaced by lattice steel structures. The transport rope carried 89 new seats, at a speed of 1.7 m/s the capacity increased to 321 people per hour and the driving time was reduced to 8.1 min. It served in regular service until 31 December 1982. During its existence, it has carried almost 6 million passengers.

At the end of the 1970s, it was decided to replace it with a new cable car. It was built between 1983 and 1986 and started operation on 1 January 1987. The supplier of the new cable car was the Tatra Enterprise of the Local Industry of the Poprad District in Kežmarok. It is a single-rope Orbit Tatrapoma TS-2 with two-seater seats. The lower station is located significantly lower in the Ráztoky valley, so the sloping length of the cable car has almost doubled. The new route has a total elevation gain of 400 meters. After twenty meters, 162 seats are placed on the conveyor rope, its capacity is 720 people per hour at a speed of 2 m/s in the summer months, and 900 people per hour at a speed of 2.5 m/s in the winter months. Over 200000 people are transported annually by cable car.
